Trauma Counseling

Trauma

Do certain images, sounds or thoughts trigger traumatic memories that make it difficult for you to have a healthy and happy life? Are you constantly on edge, worried the fear, pain, and distress you are experiencing will never end? Do you logically know that you didn’t cause or deserve what happened, but your emotions aren’t letting you feel that way? Maybe you have survived a car wreck, violent crime or physical or sexual abuse. Perhaps you experience physical symptoms such as tension, difficulty breathing or a racing heartbeat, or you shut down emotionally and physically as your mind replays the memory of the traumatic experience. You may criticize yourself or feel ashamed whenever unwanted images run through your mind. Or you might become hyper-vigilant in an effort to push back uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.

What we can do?

At Thrive Family Counseling we strive to serve those struggling with past hurts and traumas in the most respectful and healing ways. Our offices are meant to be comfortable, safe, and confidential. The clinicians that would be recommended to anyone hurting from trauma are trained and competent in the field. It can be difficult to keep up with daily obligations or sleep at night when your mind and body are constantly in fight-or-flight mode. You may prefer to numb yourself to intense emotions and the risk of pain, which can create conflict or distance in your relationships. Over time, the weight of your worries can leave you feeling anxious and depressed. Do you blame yourself for your trauma or PTSD? Do you wish you could escape the self-criticism and feelings of shame surrounding the traumatic event so you could feel calm and in control again? Or, do you wish you knew how to help a loved one who is suffering from trauma or PTSD?

Trauma

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma have become common words and statements in our culture. One of the great things from this is more awareness of the impact of negative past experiences or past hurts. It is a tragic truth of bad things happening to good people. Even more so when the pain of the past continues to hurt us in the present. This hurt can be experienced through depression, anxiety, disturbances in sleep, reminders of the pain, and other ways. When these continue for a long duration of time, we describe it as experiencing post traumatic stress.

Hope is Always in Reach

Feeling isolated and alone due to not knowing who to talk to, people around not knowing how to talk about the pain, and what to do next is real. Through competent, trained trauma therapists, healing is real. There are many types of therapeutic approaches for trauma. Thrive Family Counseling provides different methods within the Cognitive-Behavioral approach (CBT) and Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). These have been shown through research and real-life experiences to decrease difficult present experiences which bring people into counseling. None of these approaches “makes what happened in the past okay.” Instead, it allows us to move forward with a clearer awareness of the past events while being fully present and enjoying life today. .
